Who should pick which?

Good fit for…

  • Marketing teams running Google Ads or relying on Google marketing ecosystem
  • Sites and apps that need event-based measurement at high volume without per-hit SaaS fees
  • Organizations comfortable with BigQuery export for custom analysis
  • Teams that already have GA4 expertise and reporting workflows

Not a great fit for…

  • Small sites that only need simple traffic stats and want minimal compliance overhead
  • Teams avoiding Google data processing or US cloud jurisdiction concerns
  • Privacy-first positioning without cookie banners — lightweight tools win here
  • Revenue attribution for indie Stripe SaaS without significant GA4 ecommerce setup — DataFast is simpler

Good fit for…

  • Founders and marketers who want a clean dashboard without GA4 learning curve
  • Growing content and SaaS marketing sites in the 100K–1M pageview range
  • Teams that prefer managed cloud over operating analytics infrastructure
  • EU and US sites prioritizing GDPR-friendly, cookie-light analytics on the hosted product

Not a great fit for…

  • Teams that need vendor-supported self-hosting — hosted Fathom Analytics is cloud-only; see Fathom Lite if you will ops it yourself
  • Very small blogs on tight budgets — Plausible's $9/10K tier can be cheaper, or Fathom Lite is free (self-hosted)
  • Product analytics, session replay, or experimentation — use PostHog or Hotjar
  • Deep Google Ads / BigQuery workflows

Privacy & compliance

GA4 is not a privacy-first tool in the Plausible sense. It uses cookies and identifiers, processes data on Google infrastructure, and typically requires consent banners in GDPR jurisdictions.

Google offers data retention controls, IP anonymization options (context-dependent), and user deletion tools — but operational burden falls on you. Several EU regulators have scrutinized Google Analytics transfers; some organizations choose Matomo or EU-hosted alternatives for that reason.

Free does not mean zero compliance cost — legal review and consent UX are part of the total price.

Fathom positions itself as privacy-first: no cross-site tracking, no sale of visitor data, and analytics designed to reduce cookie-banner friction. Like Plausible, it targets teams that want compliance simplicity without sacrificing usable traffic reports.

Fathom Analytics (hosted) runs on Fathom's serverless cloud infrastructure. Fathom Lite is a separate self-hosted download you operate yourself — same privacy positioning, but you own uptime, updates, and backups.

Verify consent requirements with legal counsel; "privacy-friendly" does not automatically mean zero compliance obligations in every jurisdiction.

Web analytics scope

GA4 uses an event-based data model — every interaction is an event with parameters. Pageviews, scrolls, purchases, and custom actions all flow through the same pipeline. This replaces Universal Analytics' session/pageview-centric model and requires relearning reports and explorations.

Strength: flexible schema for web + app in one property. Weakness: easy to over-instrument and inflate event counts, making reports noisy without governance.

For marketing sites, start with enhanced measurement defaults and add custom events only where decisions depend on them.

Hosted Fathom Analytics delivers core marketing analytics: realtime visitors, top pages, referrers, UTMs, goals, custom events, plus device types, browsers, countries, and email reports per vendor docs.

Fathom Lite covers a narrower metric set with fewer ongoing features — Fathom's own comparison notes Lite lacks many hosted-product capabilities and receives no new feature development at the same pace.

Neither product is a full product analytics suite. Fathom answers traffic and conversion questions for websites, not in-app telemetry.

Integrations & ecosystem

Unique to Google Analytics 4

GA4's biggest advantage is integration depth: Google Ads linking, Search Console, Looker Studio, and optional BigQuery export (standard properties get limited free export; 360 unlocks more). If your growth stack is Google-centric, GA4 is the hub.

Non-Google integrations exist via GTM and APIs but are rarely as seamless as native Google links. Teams on Meta Ads or other channels often still run GA4 alongside platform pixels.

Consent Mode v2 and regional settings matter for EU traffic — misconfiguration can skew attribution and create compliance risk.

Cloud vs self-hosted

Unique to Fathom Analytics

Fathom sells two related products under one brand:

  1. Fathom Analytics — hosted SaaS from $15/month; Fathom handles infrastructure, support, and compliance posture for the managed product.
  2. Fathom Lite — free, self-hosted software you install on your own servers; no vendor support, fewer metrics, and you maintain updates yourself.

Choose hosted Fathom Analytics when you want polish and support. Choose Fathom Lite when you are technical, budget-constrained, and accept self-hosting ops. For open-source self-hosting with an active community edition, Plausible or Umami may still fit better.

UX & reliability

Unique to Fathom Analytics

Hosted Fathom is frequently praised for dashboard clarity and uptime compared with heavier platforms. For teams that abandoned GA4 because nobody looked at reports, Fathom's constraint is a feature.

Tradeoff: less extensibility. Power users who want SQL export, custom dimensions, or warehouse pipelines will outgrow Fathom faster than they outgrow GA4 or Matomo.

Fathom Lite's reliability depends entirely on your hosting — not Fathom's cloud SLA.

Pricing comparison

Google Analytics 4

GA4 standard is free for most sites within Google's collection limits. Google Analytics 360 is enterprise-priced (six figures annually) for very large organizations needing SLAs, higher limits, and advanced BigQuery.

Hidden costs: GTM/consulting time, BigQuery storage/query bills, and compliance tooling. At low traffic, GA4 wins on price vs any paid privacy tool; at high traffic, "free" still holds for standard tier but ops complexity grows.

Use our pricing calculator to compare GA4 ($0) against paid alternatives at your pageview level.

Free for up to 10,000,000 hits/month.

Free for most sites. GA4 360 starts around $50,000/year for enterprise contracts.

Fathom Analytics

Fathom Analytics bills on monthly pageviews with entry at $15/month for 100K pageviews in our directory — higher floor than Plausible's $9/10K tier but more headroom per dollar at moderate traffic. Top published tier is $169/month at 10M pageviews.

Fathom Lite is free (self-hosted); your cost is infrastructure and engineer time. A 7-day trial exists for hosted Fathom Analytics per vendor site.

Our pricing calculator reflects hosted Fathom Analytics tiers only, not Lite hosting costs.

Setup & implementation

Google Analytics 4

Typical setup:

  1. Create a GA4 property and web data stream.
  2. Install gtag.js or deploy via Google Tag Manager.
  3. Configure key events (conversions) and link Google Ads if applicable.
  4. Set data retention, internal traffic filters, and consent defaults.
  5. Validate with DebugView before trusting reports.

Common pitfalls: duplicate tags inflating counts, missing consent mode in EU, treating GA4 like UA reports, and unbounded custom events without naming conventions.

Fathom Analytics

Typical setup (hosted Fathom Analytics):

  1. Add your site in the Fathom dashboard.
  2. Paste the tracking script into your site header (or use a CMS integration).
  3. Configure goals for conversions you care about.
  4. Share the dashboard with teammates as needed.

Fathom Lite requires server provisioning, install, and ongoing maintenance — separate from hosted Fathom Analytics.

Common pitfalls: staging domains inflating counts, not tagging campaigns with UTMs, and comparing hosted Fathom numbers directly to GA4 without aligning definitions.

Transfer is the compressed download size, and decoded is what the browser parses afterward.

What this means for your site

On our empty test page, the load event finished +1.16 s later with the tag installed. On a real site, page load is likely to take at least that long — but usually not the full +1.16 s stacked on top of your other assets, because much of the work overlaps parallel downloads.

Limitations compared

Google Analytics 4

  • Steep learning curve vs Plausible/Fathom — reports are powerful but not simple.
  • Privacy and EU transfer concerns push some teams to Matomo or EU-hosted tools.
  • No session replay or heatmaps natively — pair with Hotjar or PostHog.
  • Revenue attribution for custom Stripe flows requires deliberate ecommerce/event setup.
  • Script weight and performance vary by implementation — benchmark pending on AnalyticsVS.

Fathom Analytics

  • Hosted Fathom Analytics is cloud-only — self-hosting requires the separate Fathom Lite product.
  • Fathom Lite has fewer metrics, no vendor support, and less feature velocity than hosted Fathom Analytics.
  • Higher entry price than Plausible Cloud for very small sites on the hosted product.
  • No session replay, heatmaps, or product analytics on either edition.
  • Fathom Lite is not open source (vendor distributes binaries; community maintains install docs).
  • Script performance benchmark pending on AnalyticsVS.

Bottom line

Fathom wins the "I want analytics someone will actually open" contest for many marketing sites. GA4 wins when paid search, app+web, or warehouse export are non-negotiable. Hosted Fathom starts around $15/month for 100K pageviews; GA4 standard remains $0 with higher compliance and learning costs.

Privacy vs ecosystem

This is the classic GA escape tradeoff. Fathom trades Google’s free depth for a readable, privacy-oriented SaaS. If your growth engine is Google Ads, staying on GA4 (or running both) is usually safer than a hard cutover.

Performance

We publish recorded script benchmarks for both tools. Color bands on those pages use absolute thresholds documented on methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fathom a GA4 replacement?
For many blogs and marketing sites, yes — if you mainly need pages, referrers, UTMs, and goals. It does not replace Google Ads attribution, BigQuery export, or GA4’s exploratory depth.
Does Fathom need a cookie banner?
Fathom is designed as privacy-first and cookie-light. Many teams run it without a banner in some EU contexts, but you should still verify with legal counsel for your jurisdiction and configuration.
Is Google Analytics free compared to Fathom?
GA4 standard is free. Fathom bills on pageview tiers (entry around $15/month for 100K pageviews). Factor consent tooling and analyst time into GA4’s true cost.
Can I self-host Fathom?
Hosted Fathom Analytics is cloud-only. Fathom Lite is a separate free self-hosted product with fewer features and no vendor support. For open-source self-hosting with an active community, also compare Plausible and Umami.
Which script is lighter?
On our recorded Slow-4G fixture, Fathom transferred about 2.7 KiB with roughly +251 ms load overhead. GA4 transferred about 171 KiB with roughly +1.16 s overhead. See the benchmarks hub for full details.
GA4 vs Universal Analytics — what changed?
GA4 is event-based, uses different reports, and UA stopped processing in 2023. You cannot expect one-to-one metric parity with old UA dashboards.
Fathom vs Plausible — which is cheaper?
At very low traffic, Plausible's $9/10K tier is usually cheaper than hosted Fathom Analytics. Fathom Lite is free if you self-host. Compare hosted tiers on our pricing calculator.
Fathom Lite vs Fathom Analytics — what's the difference?
Fathom Analytics is hosted SaaS with full metrics, support, and ongoing features. Fathom Lite is a free self-hosted download with a narrower feature set that you install and maintain yourself.
