Quick answer

Quick answer

Fathom is the better fit if you want managed, polished privacy analytics without running infrastructure. Umami is the better fit if you want MIT open source, self-hosting (or cheap cloud), and full data ownership and can handle ops.

Who should pick which?

Good fit for…

  • Founders and marketers who want a clean dashboard without GA4 learning curve
  • Growing content and SaaS marketing sites in the 100K–1M pageview range
  • Teams that prefer managed cloud over operating analytics infrastructure
  • EU and US sites prioritizing GDPR-friendly, cookie-light analytics on the hosted product

Not a great fit for…

  • Teams that need vendor-supported self-hosting — hosted Fathom Analytics is cloud-only; see Fathom Lite if you will ops it yourself
  • Very small blogs on tight budgets — Plausible's $9/10K tier can be cheaper, or Fathom Lite is free (self-hosted)
  • Product analytics, session replay, or experimentation — use PostHog or Hotjar
  • Deep Google Ads / BigQuery workflows

Good fit for…

  • Developers comfortable self-hosting on Vercel, Railway, Docker, or VPS
  • Teams wanting simple dashboards without GA4 complexity
  • Side projects and startups optimizing for low cost at moderate traffic

Privacy & compliance

Fathom positions itself as privacy-first: no cross-site tracking, no sale of visitor data, and analytics designed to reduce cookie-banner friction. Like Plausible, it targets teams that want compliance simplicity without sacrificing usable traffic reports.

Fathom Analytics (hosted) runs on Fathom's serverless cloud infrastructure. Fathom Lite is a separate self-hosted download you operate yourself — same privacy positioning, but you own uptime, updates, and backups.

Verify consent requirements with legal counsel; "privacy-friendly" does not automatically mean zero compliance obligations in every jurisdiction.

Umami supports cookieless tracking and avoids invasive fingerprinting in default configurations — aligning with privacy-first marketing. Because you can self-host, data never needs to leave your VPC.

Compliance still requires correct configuration, privacy policy updates, and regional rules — especially if you log authenticated user IDs in custom events.

Pair with legal review if you track logged-in user behavior.

Web analytics scope

Hosted Fathom Analytics delivers core marketing analytics: realtime visitors, top pages, referrers, UTMs, goals, custom events, plus device types, browsers, countries, and email reports per vendor docs.

Fathom Lite covers a narrower metric set with fewer ongoing features — Fathom's own comparison notes Lite lacks many hosted-product capabilities and receives no new feature development at the same pace.

Neither product is a full product analytics suite. Fathom answers traffic and conversion questions for websites, not in-app telemetry.

Umami focuses on essential web metrics: pageviews, referrers, browsers, countries, and custom events via a small API. The dashboard is fast and readable — closer to Plausible than Matomo or GA4 in scope.

That focus keeps the codebase and script lean. You will not get ecommerce funnels, tag manager complexity, or warehouse export — by design.

For personal sites, docs, and SaaS marketing pages, Umami often answers the only questions you actually check weekly.

Cloud vs self-hosted

Fathom sells two related products under one brand:

  1. Fathom Analytics — hosted SaaS from $15/month; Fathom handles infrastructure, support, and compliance posture for the managed product.
  2. Fathom Lite — free, self-hosted software you install on your own servers; no vendor support, fewer metrics, and you maintain updates yourself.

Choose hosted Fathom Analytics when you want polish and support. Choose Fathom Lite when you are technical, budget-constrained, and accept self-hosting ops. For open-source self-hosting with an active community edition, Plausible or Umami may still fit better.

Umami is MIT-licensed and widely deployed via Docker, cloud templates, and Umami Cloud (managed offering). Self-hosting means your analytics DB lives where you put it — useful for side projects avoiding recurring SaaS fees.

Community support is strong; enterprise support is not the model. Plan for upgrades, database backups, and monitoring yourself on self-hosted.

Umami Cloud provides a middle path if you like the product but not the ops.

UX & reliability

Unique to Fathom Analytics

Hosted Fathom is frequently praised for dashboard clarity and uptime compared with heavier platforms. For teams that abandoned GA4 because nobody looked at reports, Fathom's constraint is a feature.

Tradeoff: less extensibility. Power users who want SQL export, custom dimensions, or warehouse pipelines will outgrow Fathom faster than they outgrow GA4 or Matomo.

Fathom Lite's reliability depends entirely on your hosting — not Fathom's cloud SLA.

Pricing comparison

Fathom Analytics

Fathom Analytics bills on monthly pageviews with entry at $15/month for 100K pageviews in our directory — higher floor than Plausible's $9/10K tier but more headroom per dollar at moderate traffic. Top published tier is $169/month at 10M pageviews.

Fathom Lite is free (self-hosted); your cost is infrastructure and engineer time. A 7-day trial exists for hosted Fathom Analytics per vendor site.

Our pricing calculator reflects hosted Fathom Analytics tiers only, not Lite hosting costs.

—500,000$39
—1,000,000$59
—2,000,000$79
—5,000,000$119
—10,000,000$169

Pricing as of Aug 2026 — verify on vendor site.

Umami

Self-hosted Umami is free software — cost is hosting (often $5–20/month on small VPS or free tiers on hobby PaaS). Umami Cloud offers managed hosting with tiered pricing on umami.is — compare against Plausible if you prefer not to ops.

At high pageview volume, self-hosted Umami can undercut per-pageview SaaS bills if your time is cheap. At low volume, Plausible Cloud's $9 tier may be less hassle.

Use our pricing calculator to compare Umami (hosting-only estimate) vs paid SaaS tools.

Setup & implementation

Fathom Analytics

Typical setup (hosted Fathom Analytics):

  1. Add your site in the Fathom dashboard.
  2. Paste the tracking script into your site header (or use a CMS integration).
  3. Configure goals for conversions you care about.
  4. Share the dashboard with teammates as needed.

Fathom Lite requires server provisioning, install, and ongoing maintenance — separate from hosted Fathom Analytics.

Common pitfalls: staging domains inflating counts, not tagging campaigns with UTMs, and comparing hosted Fathom numbers directly to GA4 without aligning definitions.

Umami

Typical setup (self-hosted Docker):

  1. Deploy Umami with Docker Compose or a one-click template (Railway, etc.).
  2. Create an admin account and add your website ID.
  3. Insert the Umami tracking script on your site.
  4. Optionally configure custom events via umami.track().
  5. Lock down admin URL and enable backups on your database.

Common pitfalls: exposing admin without auth hardening, losing data without DB backups, and forgetting to exclude your own visits.

Loading method
Defer · non-blocking

This script downloads in the background and runs after the HTML is parsed, so the browser can draw the page’s first visible content without waiting on it.

Script filesize
2.7 KiB transfer6.8 KiB decoded

Transfer is the compressed download size, and decoded is what the browser parses afterward.

What this means for your site

On our empty test page, the load event finished +251 ms later with the tag installed. On a real site, page load is likely to take at least that long — but usually not the full +251 ms stacked on top of your other assets, because much of the work overlaps parallel downloads.

Limitations compared

Fathom Analytics

  • Hosted Fathom Analytics is cloud-only — self-hosting requires the separate Fathom Lite product.
  • Fathom Lite has fewer metrics, no vendor support, and less feature velocity than hosted Fathom Analytics.
  • Higher entry price than Plausible Cloud for very small sites on the hosted product.
  • No session replay, heatmaps, or product analytics on either edition.
  • Fathom Lite is not open source (vendor distributes binaries; community maintains install docs).
  • Script performance benchmark pending on AnalyticsVS.

Umami

  • Self-hosting is the default power path — not ideal for non-technical teams.
  • Feature set is intentionally narrow — no replay, flags, or deep funnels.
  • No official Google Ads integration or BigQuery export.
  • Enterprise support and compliance documentation lighter than Matomo Cloud.
  • Script performance benchmark pending on AnalyticsVS.

Bottom line

Pick hosted Fathom for founders who want a clean dashboard and support, and will pay from ~$15/month for 100K pageviews. Pick Umami when Docker/VPS comfort is high and recurring SaaS analytics fees feel wrong. Also compare Plausible if you want open source plus a mature managed cloud middle ground.

Triangle with Plausible

We already publish Plausible vs Fathom and Plausible vs Umami. This page closes the third side: managed polish (Fathom) vs open-source ownership (Umami). Many teams still land on Plausible as the default compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fathom open source?
Hosted Fathom Analytics is proprietary SaaS. Fathom Lite is a separate free self-hosted product with fewer features and no vendor support — different from Umami’s MIT community model.
Is Umami easier than Fathom?
Hosted Fathom is easier for non-developers. Self-hosted Umami is easier for developers who already ship Docker apps and want zero analytics SaaS lock-in.
Which is cheaper?
At low traffic, hosted Fathom’s $15/100K entry can beat some competitors’ site limits but costs more than a tiny VPS running Umami. At high traffic, self-hosted Umami often undercuts per-pageview SaaS if your time is cheap. Use the pricing calculator for SaaS tiers; add hosting for Umami self-host estimates.
Which has better privacy?
Both aim at privacy-friendly web analytics. Hosted Fathom keeps data on Fathom’s cloud; Umami self-hosted keeps data on your servers. Legal review still applies for either path.
How do scripts compare?
Fathom’s recorded bench is lightweight (~2.7 KiB transfer, ~+251 ms overhead). Umami’s script weight is not yet recorded on AnalyticsVS.
Fathom vs Plausible — which is cheaper?
At very low traffic, Plausible's $9/10K tier is usually cheaper than hosted Fathom Analytics. Fathom Lite is free if you self-host. Compare hosted tiers on our pricing calculator.
Fathom Lite vs Fathom Analytics — what's the difference?
Fathom Analytics is hosted SaaS with full metrics, support, and ongoing features. Fathom Lite is a free self-hosted download with a narrower feature set that you install and maintain yourself.
Umami vs Plausible?
Plausible for managed privacy analytics with vendor support. Umami when you want open source and self-hosting control, often at lower marginal cost.
